IROQUOIS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AWARDED STROKE READY HOSPITAL DESIGNATION
JANUARY 26, 2015
Watseka, IL - Chuck Bohlmann, IMH CEO, is pleased to announce that Iroquois Memorial Hospital has been officially designated a "Stroke Ready Hospital" by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).The designation is awarded only to hospitals with the ideal mix of medical professionals, diagnostic capabilities, and treatment programs in place to provide emergency stroke care. "Receiving this designation by the State of Illinois is validation to the commitment that Iroquois Memorial Hospital has in delivering specialized services to local residents," said Bohlmann.
Hospitals in Illinois seeking Stroke Ready designation must meet specific criteria to be eligible. Those criteria include being able to administer thrombolytic therapy, or subsequently developed medical therapies that meet nationally recognized evidence-based stroke protocols or guidelines, able to conduct brain image tests at all times, and align with nationally recognized, evidence-based standards, such as those from the American Heart/Stroke Association and Brain Attack Coalition.
Because there are at least 795,000 strokes annually and over 130,000 people die each year from a stroke. Bohlmann encourages those in the community to learn how to spot a stroke and "ACT F.A.S.T." Follow this F.A.S.T. acronym if someone is exhibiting any of the above symptoms:
FACE - Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
ARMS - Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
SPEECH - Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?
TIME - If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.
