Sleep Lab
It is estimated that over 40% of American adults suffer from some type of sleep disorder. While some disorders are simply aggravating to the sufferer, others can actually be dangerous to one's health. To combat this increasingly common problem, Iroquois Memorial Hospital has just opened a new Sleep Lab.
Sleep Disorders have the potential of harming an individual's personal health, quality of life and endanger public safety by contributing to traffic and industrial accidents. Sleep Disorders include problems such as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, staying awake, adhering to a consistent sleep/wake schedule, sleepwalking, bedwetting, nightmares and others.
A potentially serious disorder is Sleep Apnea. This condition causes a temporary closure of the upper respiratory passage airway during sleep. People with Sleep Apnea experience frequent episodes where they cease to breathe for ten seconds or more. This causes the sufferer to feel chronically fatigued and if severe, can adversely affect a normal heart rhythm.
